Florida Alternative Breaks

FAB is a program at the University of Florida based out of the Center for Leadership and Service. The program allows students who are passionate about service to spend their breaks giving back to the community of their choice.

While students do travel outside of their local community for their service, this is not the motivating factor. They are educated about relevant social issues and encouraged to learn a community conscious approach to their daily lives.

Students chose their volunteer trip based on the work, not location. This allows the cause to motivate an individual’s involvement. Participants research their work before they attend the trip, and typically develop or have a passion for their projects.

Like many alternative break programs, FAB uses the Active Citizen Continuum to measure students' involvement. This tool also includes tactics to improve volunteer impact and involvement.

Since FAB is community-centric, that is why it is considered a volunteer, not voluntour, program.
