Trail Missions

Voluntourists can take away jobs from local workers. Trail Missions is a nonprofit who hires local workers instead of foreign volunteers. The organization partners with villages and equips them stand alone and teach other villages. In contrast, voluntourism companies have little to no contact with any local leaders to measure the effectiveness of their work.

Emalee Christy has gone on two trips with Trail Missions in Zambia, Africa: a three-week trip and a seven-month one. Dr. Stephen Wearing who has published multiple books about the economics and effectiveness of voluntourism weighs in on how voluntourist trips can be improved.
